Germany

Schwerin, about 100km west of Hamburg, is one of the prettiest cities in northern Germany. Experience Schwerin's cultural hotspots, discover its beautiful parks, buildings and museums, and soak up the most breath-taking views of Schwerin where nature and culture perfectly combine to create a unique townscape. The city centre is small enough to explore on foot, but you should also take your time to discover the beautiful landscape in the surrounding areas.

If you would like your German holiday to take you elsewhere in the country, we also have Leipzig city breaks and hotels in Garmisch available.

Schwerin Castle

Schwerin's fairytale castle is the regional capital's most famous landmark and the seat of the regional parliament. Surmounted with glittering golden spires, it stands on an island in Lake Schwerin. In the castle museum, visitors can tour the state rooms in all their historic grandeur then relax in the Castle Café or the Mediterranean ambience of the orangery.

Market square

The old town hall, gabled houses and the lion statue give the market square its distinctive character. The cathedral rises up behind the graceful 18th-century 'new building' with its classical-style columns. There are fabulous panoramic views of the town and the surrounding area from the spire of the cathedral. Just a stone's throw away are the Butchers Market and the old cathedral square.

Cathedral

The cathedral is a prime example of brick Gothic architecture and is the town's only medieval architectural monument. The 14th-century wall paintings in the Chapel of the Assumption are particularly eye-catching whilst the Gothic altar, with a depiction of the crucifixion, is another of the gems in its interior. Every year, numerous organ recitals are given by organists from all over the world.

Niederländischer Hof

Parquet flooring and champagne colours add an elegant ambience to this small restaurant.

Crowne Plaza

A pleasant atmosphere has been created in a restaurant with warm colours and a contemporary style.

Weinhaus Uhle

This traditional house dates back to 1751. Under its high vaulted ceiling, dine on international cuisine or simpler daily specials in the cosy wine bar.

Just a few minutes' walk from Schwerin Castle, you can browse around the historic streets of the old town or the covered arcades and exclusive shops in its winding lanes. There is also a vast shopping mall in the centre of town. Whether you prefer small boutiques, craft shops or traditional farmers' markets, shopping opportunities abound in Schwerin.

Old town

The narrow streets and alleyways of Schwerin's old town are perfect for a shopping trip, as are its grand promenades. Mecklenburgstrasse, in particular, is packed with shops, friendly restaurants and historical buildings. The shops along Friedrichstrasse, Puschkinstrasse, Schlossstrasse and Schmiedestrasse specialise in unusual goods with a regional flavour.

Schlosspark shopping centre

The Schlosspark shopping centre on Marienplatz square unites a range of specialist shops under one roof. Light and elegant, the three storeys of this glass-roofed arcade are a shopper's paradise whatever the weather.

The "Worm"

The "Worm" in Marienplatz square is a hub for shopping, entertainment and the media. The centre has its own multi-storey car park and contains a wide range of shops. When you've been into the fashion and sports stores, the hairdresser's and the perfumeries, take a break in the gourmet food hall or one of the cafés. There is also a cinema, a casino and a disco for night owls.
