Germany

Idyllically situated between the Taunus Mountains in the north and the Rhine in the south, Wiesbaden in Germany is the multifaceted capital of 'Hessen'. A city of grand villas, sparkling wine, hot springs and thermal baths, Wiesbaden is lovingly known as the 'Nice of the North'. Due to its elegant charm, imposing architecture, peaceful parks and rich cultural scene, this beautiful city has been attracting visitors ever since the Romans first discovered it.

The Hessian state capital, convention and health centre is surrounded by one of Germany's finest wine regions. It is the city of springs, mansions, wine and a history that spans over 2000 years. Wiesbaden is colourful and bursting with things to do such and there are sporting events that draw huge crowds, such as the Ironman 70.3. These are just as popular as the Theatrium, the classic among Germany's street festivals, the ten-day Rheingau Wine Festival, the Wiesbaden City Festival and the Twinkling Star Christmas Market during Advent. Wiesbaden is often called the Gateway to the Rheingau - a region full of palaces, castles and monasteries.

Kurhaus Wiesbaden

Built in 1907, the Kurhaus, with its elegant casino, is an imposing building and one of Wiesbaden's main landmarks.  It is a restored classical building which has been converted into the city's main theatre, convention centre and casino. The casino is open daily from 3pm to 3am. Stroll through the spa gardens.

Historical Old Town

Schlossplatz square in the centre of the city contains the stunning gothic Market Church and the New Town Hall. On the northern side of the square is the neoclassical City Castle, home to the regional parliament.

Neroberg Mountain

On the outskirts of Wiesbaden, you will find Neroberg Mountain. A restored 1888 cable car makes the trip up the hill to the Russian Orthodox Church, modelled on the Church of Ascension in Moscow. The Russian Church, the climbing forest, the Opelbad, the adventure spot Erlebnismulde, as well as the panoramic view, make the local mountain a popular spot.

Biebrich Palace by the Rhine River

The annual international Horse Show at Whitsun, its parrots, the beautiful palace gardens and the flair of the river Rhine is unique.

Hot Springs

Even the Romans appreciated the healing effect of the 26 hot springs. You can experience the diversity of the hot springs in Wiesbaden's thermal baths.

Old Town

Famous row of houses known as the Schiffchen (little ship) with boutiques, goldsmiths, small shops and a variety of restaurants offering Italian cuisine and local specialities.

Trüffel

This classy and friendly restaurant is a deli and bistro with a lovely upstairs terrace that's an absolute must.

Käfers

A popular bistro with striking art nouveau décor and daily live music.

Zum Dortmunder

This centrally located restaurant serves regional cuisine in pub atmosphere and the warm ambience makes it a local favourite

There is a good reason why Wiesbaden is rated consistently highly in a variety of shopping city rankings. Individual retailers and the prestigious stores of renowned chains make a stroll through the shops a very special experience.

For exclusive and luxury goods, head for elegant Wilhelmstrasse. Taunusstrasse has mainly antique shops but is also excellent for art and design. The romantic passageways in the old quarter are full of shops offering curiosities, the nostalgic and the unusual, and, in the pedestrian area of Wiesbaden's city centre, you will find everything from high street shops to large department stores.
