An early departure and late return from Stansted with Ryanair gave us a full day at the Xmas Markets in Bremen early last December. Bremen is a small regional airport – very quick to get through coming in or leaving. The transfer to the city centre was quick, cheap and easy by local tram just outside arrivals. Bremen is delightful. A mix of original traditional buildings and clever post-war reconstruction – it’s hard to tell the difference.

In November and December the centre is filled with market stalls – each corner you turn offers more to see. A high percentage of goods have to be handmade and local to the area and the quality was fantastic. Don’t forget to stop for a gluhwein or two – all part of the authentic experience! I recommend the Rathaus (town hall) for lunch – the cellar is a fabulous restaurant, full of history and a delicious local menu on offer. Plenty to do here for a 1 or 2 night stay any time of year – the Maritim Hotel offers great accommodation within easy distance of the old centre.
