A trip to Sardinia is an island escape like no other. Yes you can relax on the white sand beaches of Costa del Sud and Costa Smeralda; yes you can admire Roman ruins like those found in other Italian destinations – but, as DH Lawrence once said, Sardinia is different. You’ll feel it from the moment you arrive. The local dialect is a mixture of Spanish and Italian, the cuisine is unique and features specialities like the maggot-infested casu marzu pecorino (cheese), and you’re more likely to come across Bronze Age towers called nuraghe than Roman villas.
Cagliari and Olbia are fantastic seaside settings to enjoy but, away from the fringes of the island, a series of wild and somewhat remote landscapes host adventurous hikes through forests, canyons and so-called fairy houses (ancient chamber tombs). The coasts can be just as thrilling, though, especially if you’re diving down to Nereo Cave or watching the daring climbers scale the cliffs of Cala Luna.
