The Rotterdam skyline is dominated by modern structures like the Cube Houses, Markthal and Erasmus Bridge. This is partly because of the devastation the city experienced during WWII but also because Rotterdam continues to produce and attract some of the most innovative minds in urban design. It’s a destination that is endlessly pleasing to explore on foot, helped by a plethora of bridges over the New and Old Maas Rivers. These waterways both characterise the city and provide escape from it when you want to take a boat trip to nearby Kinderdijk.
Just like Rotterdam, The Hague is a great city through which to wander without too much direction. Over the years, it has worked hard to shake off the tag of being all about business and bureaucracy, and thanks to growing cultural and culinary scenes, the tide is changing. The arts have played a key role in this, helping to create a destination where live music and world-class museums are just as likely to be found as stately buildings and partying politicians.
