Marseille is in the middle of a renaissance, meaning there’s no better time to visit this Mediterranean port city. The commercial boats of yesteryear have been replaced in the harbour by luxury yachts and daycruisers, whilst cultural attractions continue to grow one art gallery at a time. However, Marseille is not as swanky and fashionable as Cannes or St. Tropez and nor does it aim to be.
The fact that it has kept an element of its tenacious past gives it a unique vibe that makes it feel far more real than its neighbours down the coast.
Away from the attractive harbour and bustling beaches, a range of distinct districts present boutique shopping opportunities and the chance to learn more of the city’s history. Look out for the Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde and the Cathédrale de Marseille Notre Dame de la Major (not that you can miss either of them).
