Although immensely proud of its industrial past, Linz is a city that doesn’t rely on its history. Don’t get us wrong, it’s there for everyone to enjoy, but there’s more than one eye on tomorrow thanks to a vibrant arts and culture scene that helped it become European Capital of Culture in 2019. There’s even a Museum of the Future (Museum der Zukunft) that perfectly encompasses this forward-thinking attitude.
You may not expect a city famous for its billowing steelworks to be easy on the eye, but Linz bucks this trend dramatically.
Areas like the Mural Harbour, the pöstlingberg and the bustling Hauptplatz highlight this best. There’s even a project known as Höhenrausch, which combines modern art with spectacular views from a wooden exhibition tower.
It’s as much a feast for the eyes as a traditional Linzer torte is for the mouth.
