The capital of Tyrol perhaps highlights Austria’s ability to switch between urban and rural enchantments in the blink of an eye better than any other city. But before you head for the hills and hiking trails that take you through green pastures, Innsbruck deserves your attention for a few days at least.
You have Emperor Maximillian I to thank for much of the Hapsburg Empire splendour that can be seen on the streets, especially on the medieval Aldstadt. Keen to highlight its beauty, he installed Innsbruck as the imperial capital during his rule. And, although it no longer holds this title, it has continued to be desired by dynasties and empires throughout the centuries.
You don’t have to be an avid hiker to enjoy the outdoor side of the city. A short journey into the nearby Nordkette Mountains via cable car will give you a taste of the fresh air and breathtaking vistas that the region boasts.
