Another ocean cruise specialist branching into the rivers market, Saga have taken their over 50s product to the waterways of Europe and Africa. As well as having itineraries on famous and less familiar rivers all over the continent, they also offer trips along Egypt’s Nile. Their vast fleet of chartered ships include many that are solely used by Saga guests, so you know you’ll be sailing with people of a similar age and with similar interests.
Many of the options offer an all-inclusive price that includes a free bar, drinks with meals and even optional travel insurance. There’s also a handy UK travel service that you can take advantage off, providing you with free rail or coach transfers to the airport or free parking if you would rather drive yourself.
With a wide range of different ships to choose from, you are sure to find a size and style of accommodation to suit you. Although specific facilities will vary depending on which vessel you sail with, mod-cons such as TVs, hairdryers, personal safes and air-conditioning are pretty common throughout.
Most ships will offer different grades of stateroom, giving you the chance to increase the level of service you will receive and give yourself more space. Some ships will have balconies, whilst others may just offer panoramic windows or portholes. For more information on accommodation, visit the specific ship page.
The style of dining will depend on which ship you are sailing with but you can look forward to enjoying delicious meals that are made using regional ingredients and washed down with local wines. Breakfasts are typically served buffet style with lunches and dinners being an a la carte affair but, again, this can vary from ship to ship. Some vessels may offer an outside seating area for al fresco dining but all will include a main restaurant when you can savour the sumptuous flavours on your plate.
As Saga River Cruises charter their ships from a number of different operators, the exact facilities on each will vary. However, there is usually a main restaurant, a lounge area and a sun deck where you can relax as the world floats by your chair. Certain ships may also have fitness and wellbeing areas where you can either work out in the gym or enjoy a rejuvenating massage after a long day of sightseeing. Other public areas could include a library, a swimming pool and a small boutique where you can purchase souvenirs and essentials. For more details on facilities visit the specific ship page.
On selected Saga River Cruises, there will be some excursions included in the price. These will usually be city tours or attraction visits to give you an idea of what your latest port of call has to offer. There will also be a range of additional excursions that will allow you to explore the destination in more detail and go beyond the typical tourist sights. Examples of activities include a visit to the Keukenhof gardens during your time in Amsterdam, a Danube Delta safari on a smaller boat and an exploration of the Saxon Switzerland National Park along the Elbe.
