Sandwiched between the azure blue of the Adriatic Sea and the green slopes of the mountains in the distance, Split is a lively city where the friendly locals are always pleased to see you. The historic sights here feel like a bigger part of everyday life than in somewhere like Dubrovnik, particularly because the most impressive of them, Diocletian’s Palace, has been adapted to host many great restaurants, cafes and shops.
You could spend your entire trip exploring the narrow streets of this city within a city, but there’s plenty to see elsewhere too.
Take a stroll along the Riva, a beautiful seaside promenade, to see boats departing for the nearby islands and Croatians playing Picigin - a take on keepy-uppy where only the hands are used. Or, join them on the beach for a dip in the cooling water.
