Scandinavia’s clean, crisp air and jaw-dropping scenery make for an understandably popular destination for the keen traveller. The Bergen Line weaves from the pretty second city of Norway through the watery landscapes of the outer Norwegian Fjords region, and inwards through a land of rapid white-water and snow-capped craggy peaks.
With a change of trains at Mydral, it is upwards on the super-steep Flåm Railway. The highly scenic line navigates its way through extremely challenging terrain with a gradient of up to 1-in-18, through a land of thundering waterfalls, coniferous forests, deep gorges and gently hanging clouds and mist.
The highest standard-gauge railway in northern Europe will reach 1,222m at its highest point at Finse, and as you head east, the views change as the land flattens and the voyage passes through more populous regions towards the country’s capital, Oslo.
