Spain

Barcelona is located in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. It is the capital of Catalonia, a region with its own language, character and history - many Catalans think of their home as a separate country. It is situated between the sea and the mountains and has found a formidable balance, with one foot in tradition and the other in the avant-garde.

Barcelona has the reputation of being the most cosmopolitan, modern and avant-garde city in Spain but it's also a home for gorgeous beaches, serene parks and gardens, the uniquely preserved medieval historic quarter Barri Gotic, fine museums and elegant restaurants with gastronomic delights. Your trip to Barcelona will most likely be a journey of discovery that you will never forget.

La Sagrada Familia

This masterpiece of modernist architecture, built by Antoni Gaudi, pushes the gothic style to the extreme and is the only cathedral in the world still under construction, since 1882. Not to be missed.

Casa Batlló

One of the strangest residential buildings in Europe, this is Gaudí at his hallucinogenic best.

Santa Maria del Mar

XIV century Gothic Church with famous stained glass windows.

Picasso Museum

Barcelona's most visited museum.

Nou Camp

FC Barcelona museum & stadium

MACBA

Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona

Tibidabo hill

At 542m (1778ft), it is the highest hill in the wooded range that forms the backdrop to Barcelona. If the air's clear, it's a great place for views over the city.

Barri Gotic area of Barcelona

The Barri Gotic contains a concentration of medieval Gothic buildings and is the nucleus of old Barcelona.

Barcelona can boast some of the finest restaurants in Spain. You can get food from any part of the world, but make sure you try some Catalan food which has a reputation for producing some of Spain's finest cuisine.

Barcelona is an extremely practical city for shopping, with around 35,000 shops, mainly all concentrated in the centre and the historical part of the city.

Barcelona is a great night time city, and the array of after-dark diversions is staggering. There's an energy and creativity in the local nightlife that isn't found anywhere else. Barcelona's nightlife will have something of interest for everyone and to fit most budgets and locations - fashionable bars and clubs operate in nearly every major district of the city.

Did you know?

Barcelona didn’t have any beaches until the 1992 Olympics. The sand was imported to help renovate an area that was previously home to fishing harbours and wasteland.
