The Canary Islands On The Silver Screen
As a highly anticipated cinema season begins, film-lovers may be wondering where their favourite movies were filmed.

As a highly anticipated cinema season begins, film-lovers may be wondering where their favourite movies were filmed. Rambo 5, Wonder Women 1984 and the recently announced Game of Thrones Prequel have (or will use) the Canary Islands as a backdrop, showcasing the otherworldly nature of this archipelago. Lately, the islands have seen more attention from large filming companies for their stunning backdrops, warm summer weather and vast national parks, creating the perfect scene for a washed up island or a tropical resort.

Rambo V

As the fifth (and probably final) film in the epic Rambo series,Sylvester Stallone brings us another instalment from his most thrilling franchise. As the plot takes you through the highs and lows you expect to see in any Rambo film, you may notice scenes produced on the jaw-dropping island of Tenerife. Taking advantage of the island’s white, sandy beaches and bustling cities, the film is unlikely to fall short for any visual reasons. As pointed out by the president of Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, the island is now receiving more interest from the filming industry, which will in turn help Tenerife by creating jobs as extras for the locals and promoting to the island to tourists.

Wonder Woman 1984

After mostly positive reviews for the now renowned ‘Wonder Women’, Gal Gadot returns for the second time as DC’s most successful female protagonist, Wonder Women. Even though the film is being set in 1984, the official release date is 5th June 2020 and two of the filming locations have been announced as Fuerteventura and Tenerife. Both islands are admired for their beauty, but Fuerteventura is esteemed for its wealth of diverse terrain in the form of mountains and coves.

In the Heart of the Sea

Inspired by the 1851 novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville, ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ takes us back to 1820 to tell the classic whaling ship’s story. Starring Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Ben Wishaw, Brendan Gleeson and the now famous Tom Holland (Spiderman), it uses the coastline of La Gomera to create the perfect setting for a tense tale. The team even went as far as building an artificial pool to accommodate them on days when there was likely to be unpredictable weather.

Game of Thrones Prequel

Arguably one on the largest TV shows ever, Game of Thrones is almost coming to a close. But don’t panic, as one offive prequels has officially been given the green light. Rumoured to be set around 10,000 years before the original ‘Ice and Fire’ storyline, the prequel will feature a whole new cast that has to face the tragedies following the creation of the notorious White Walkers. Once again, the Canary Islands have been chosen as a filming location. Whether this will be for the island of Dorneor a Dothraki sea, we will have to wait and see.

If you would like to see any of these filming locations for yourself, why not stay on the island of La Gomera at the luxurious Hotel Jardín Tecina?
