How To Make The Most Of A Sea Day
There's no reason you should be put off by a cruise that features a few sea days. Here's how to make that time on the open ocean anything but boring.

Passengers often believe sea days are boring due to there being nothing to do. In this case, many choose to book cruises with the least amount of time spent on the open ocean. However, regardless of the ship you’re on, there’s always plenty for you to do.

If you’ve just booked a cruise that takes a few days from one port to the next, read on to find out what you could get up to.

Work Up A Sweat

Fitness Centre

If you’re a real fitness fanatic, why not hit the gym on your day at sea? The fully-equipped onboard gyms are filled with the latest equipment, encouraging you to exercise at your own pace. Whether you choose to run on the treadmill or use the step machine, you can look through floor-to-ceiling-windows and enjoy a beautiful view of the sea - that’s bound to motivate you.

When cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line, you can book onto one of the many fitness classes including yoga, Pilates and spin. Alternatively, you can grab some fresh air and run eight times around the jogging track on the top deck to reach a mile.

Soak Up The Sun

Outdoor Screen Royal Caribbean

The majority of cruisers tend to relax on a sunbed during a day at sea, soaking up the rays in between splashing about in the pools and hot tubs. This is the perfect way to pass a day in the heat of the Caribbean or Mediterranean.

If you find yourself on one of Royal Caribbean’s ships, there are giant, outdoor screens situated on the top deck. While basking in the sun or swimming around in the pools, you can enjoy a blockbuster movie. Films are also played during the evenings, so why not get cosy with a blanket and snacks and enjoy some thrilling entertainment under the stars?

Enjoy A Treatment

Persian Garden

Maybe the weather is not in your favour during your day at sea, so visiting the onboard spa is a good idea. Either treat yourself to a massage, facial or body wrap or unwind in the various saunas, steam rooms and whirlpools.

One of the world's leading spas, the Canyon Ranch Spa, can be found onboard Celebrity Cruises’ ships, offering world-class treatments from aromatherapy muscle soother massages to ageless oxygen boost facials. Also in the spa complex is the Persian Garden, where you can enjoy the scent of pure plant essence in the aroma steam room or unwind in the 60°C herbal sauna.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Shop

Shopping is a great way to spend a day at sea. You can get yourself a souvenir in the Logo Shop, or treat a friend or family member at home to something special in the jewellery store. The various fashion boutiques offer the latest collections for men, women and children, including clothing fit for formal nights and pool cover-ups.

All cruise lines have a wide array of shops, however, there’s plenty of shops on board MSC Cruises’ ships. This includes shops offering goods like technological products, wines and make-up, all at tax-free prices.

Join In Onboard Activities

Culinary Classes

Whatever ship you’re on, they’ll be plenty of group activities to can get involved in, whether it be an intense trivia quiz or a cookery class. For example, on board Oceania Cruises’ Riviera and Marina, you can spend time with chefs from around the world and learn seasonal, farm-to-table recipes; sample wines alongside Patagonia-inspired meals and master fundamental cooking techniques.

If stargazing has always been on your wish list, sail with Princess Cruises and join in the stargazing with Discovery at SEA. This unique activity takes you on a cosmic journey through the night’s sky from the ship’s top deck. A specialist will help you find your bearings and identify constellations.
