Fairy Tale Route Suggested Break
Lying at one end of the German Fairytale Route, the streets of Bremen are filled with stories, myths and legends. From the iconic Bremen Town Musicians (a donkey, dog, cat and rooster depicted on each other’s shoulders) to a fountain based on Seven Lazy Brothers, there is a whimsical nature to many of the sights. There’s nothing fictional about the sheer beauty of the buildings on the Marktplatz, though. You’ll struggle to know which way to look as the resplendent town hall, parliament building and Romanesque cathedral all vie for your attention. With the emblematic Roland Statue (the symbol of a free city) standing guard, there’s real gravitas emanating from this central square. Elsewhere in the city, there are a number of neighbourhoods that help you understand different aspects of the past. The Schlacte Promenade, which runs alongside the River Weser, reveals maritime history and a number of nostalgic ships, whilst the celebrated Schnoor Quarter features charming cobbled lanes where souvenir shops and historic, yet tiny, houses sit side by side.Bremen is ideal for a short weekend hop from the UK. Flight time is less than 90 minutes, you can get to the city centre from the airport in less than 15 minutes and most of the main sights are in walking distance from each other.
