Gibraltar Suggested Break
Even if you have never been before, you will instantly feel at home when you set foot in Gibraltar. English signs will guide you to shops and restaurants where you will spend pounds sterling and have no problem relaying your choice of meal to the English-speaking staff.
This British overseas territory offers all the good things about Britain but with far less of those dreary rainy days. Positioned at the southern end of Spain, it benefits from much warmer temperatures than the UK and is therefore an ideal holiday destination if you enjoy travelling to familiar surroundings.
Gibraltar is improved even further by outside infl uences from its closest neighbours. The flavours of Spain and other Mediterranean countries have impacted on some of the food, meaning you are likely to see Calentita (baked pancake made with chickpea fl our) served alongside good old fi sh and chips. In fact, this is actually Gibraltar’s national dish and there’s even a festival dedicated to it every year. The Calentita Food Festival will next take place on 22nd June 2019.
Gibraltar’s architecture also shows that, however much it might feel like it at times, this is not Britain. Everyday buildings resemble the fl at blocks across the Spanish border, but there is an even bigger influence from across the eponymous strait. North African design is most evident when considering the Moorish castle overlooking the bay and the striking Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque down at Europa Point, from which you could be in Morocco in minutes.
Perhaps the most famous thing about Gibraltar, though, is its attractions. There’s no shortage of things to do whilst you’re here but, with some great beaches, there’s no need to do anything at all if you don’t want to. A gentle stroll around the new Ocean Village is a great way to break up the hours spent lounging in the sun.
Wherever you go, though, you’ll be in the shadow of the famous Rock of Gibraltar, where many of the highlights can be found. And whilst the cheeky Barbary macaques may get all the headlines, there’s a lot more to discover within this unique natural monument.
Price is based on two adults sharing a room departing London Gatwick on 9th November 2019.
