Bremen, Bremerhaven & Hamburg

New life has been breathed into Bremerhaven recently thanks to the completion of the Havenwelt project. Having rejuvenated much of the harbour area, it now acts as an intriguing juxtaposition between modern buildings and those that highlight the port city’s maritime past. This place has certainly come a long way since it was merely seen as Bremen’s harbour (which is where the name comes from).

Stepping away from the water for a bit, there are also some fantastic museums to discover. See where the journey started for many of the immigrants heading to New York’s Ellis Island at the German Emigration Centre and then experience all the world’s weather in the unique Climate House.

Hamburg hasn’t forgotten the maritime trade on which the city’s fortunes were built and many of its attractions hark back to this time. The harbour is one of the most popular districts to explore, a place where new and old combine in the form of the UNESCO-listed warehouses on the Speicherstadt and the much more recently created Elbphilharmonie. The latter is a standout part of the widespread HafenCity district, a project that has breathed new life into Hamburg’s port.

The same things that make Hamburg one of Germany’s most liveable cities are what attract large numbers of visitors throughout the year. The sinful mile known as the Reeperbahn is there for a night to remember, whilst excellent shopping, relaxing green spaces and historic monuments like the cathedral give you plenty to do during the day.
