P&O Cruises starts construction of new ship
Due to launch in 2020, work has begun on P&O Cruises' newest vessel at the Meyer Werft shipyard. The name of this new vessel is due to be announced on Thursday.

The Meyer Weft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, is often a hive of activity. Many modern ships have been built here including Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Disney Dream, Norwegian Breakaway, Celebrity Silhouette and many more.

This week saw construction commence on what will become the largest ship ever built specifically for a British market, with P&O Cruises looking to bolster their fleet in 2020. At present not many details have been revealed about the 180,000-tonne new build, but it will offer a wider range of accommodation choices, dining options and entertaining performances.

There will be a total of 15 dining venues, with eight speciality restaurants and more than 10 places to enjoy your favourite tipple. 18 whirlpools will combine with four swimming pools (one indoor and three outdoor) along with ample sunbeds to enable you to soak up the sun. In total, she will carry a maximum capacity of 5,200 passengers to a wide range of destinations around the world.

Last month, on 25th April 2018, the first piece of steel was cut for the new build and was marked accordingly at a steel cutting ceremony attended by P&O Cruises Senior Vice President, Paul Ludlow, Carnival UK President, Josh Weinstein, and Meyer Werft Managing Director, Tim Meyer.

Speaking at the event, Weinstein said: “This is the first time in 20 years that P&O Cruises has had a ship built by Meyer Werft.

“I'd like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to get us to the first stage in the life of this ground-breaking vessel.

“Meyer Werft has an enviable track record of producing genuinely innovative ships which also deliver tremendous levels of operational efficiency.”

Last year, P&O Cruises held a competition to name the new ship, with members of the public being able to put forward their suggestions. More than 30,000 entries were received, with a judging panel making the final decision on the name. The winning entry will be announced on Thursday at 4pm via the line's Facebook page.

In addition to this new build, the line also has intentions to launch another larger-size vessel in 2022. Also currently unnamed, the ship will be a sister to the 2020 vessel and will be even bigger in size - offering passengers a next-generation cruising experience.

P&O Cruises is renowned for offering passengers the opportunity to enjoy a taste of home while on their holidays. Whether embarking on a cruise through the charming towns of the Mediterranean or to the blissful beaches of the Caribbean, you will be able to enjoy an onboard atmosphere that blends contemporary elements with a traditional atmosphere.
