Encounters with the Gorillas of Rwanda
The silverback mountain gorillas are a critically endangered species. One place you can view them up close is in the Parc National des Volcans of Rwanda.

Located towards the north-western tip of Tanzania and the south-western tip of Uganda, the land-locked African nation of Rwanda is known for its diverse range of flora and fauna. As well as being known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda is also known for providing a home for some of the world’s rare species of animals including the silverback mountain gorillas. Sadly, the estimated number of these gorillas is thought to be no more than 900.

The silverback mountain gorilla is much like other species but has a much thicker and longer coat that enables them to adapt to colder temperatures. Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans is hidden within the mountains and is one of the only places on earth where you will find these beautiful, yet critically endangered animals. Fred. Holidays offers a range of tours to this protected area, where you will be able to get up close with a family of gorillas.

Unlike other tours, which provide the opportunity to the witness and observe exotic species of wildlife from a distance, our tours allow you to travel off the beaten track to visit a family of silverback mountain gorillas. Upon reaching the Parc National des Volcans, your guide will cut a path through the undergrowth before giving a safety briefing.

You will then embark on a three-hour trek through the wilderness, covering ascents and descents over muddy slopes. Eventually, you will catch a glimpse of these rare gorillas in their natural habitat after reaching the designated spot for the family group. An adult male can weigh up to 195kg and can reach up to 1.7 metres in height. They are vegetarian and can be quite destructive in their eating habits, which has led to very careful protection, with consideration for nearby farmers.

Each group will be allowed to get as close as eight metres to the family of gorillas, who are habituated to human presence. However, to avoid over familiarisation, your time with the gorillas is kept to one hour. The minimum distance factor is in place in order to prevent the spread of human disease, of which gorillas are thought to be very susceptible.

This mesmerising experience through the forested mountains of Rwanda will leave you with many unforgettable memories. As well as Rwanda, you could combine this experience with a journey to the Bwindi National Park in Uganda, which is another designated area for silverback mountain gorillas. You could also travel to Lake Nakuru in Kenya, where you will be able to witness white and black rhinos and a range of exotic birdlife.
