SICILIAN VOLCANOES

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

For me the most inspirational moment was just as we arrived at the very top of Stromboli. It had been a challenging but rewarding trek up to the top and as we were putting our safety helmets and extra layers on, the local guide shouted "quick...look...an explosion" and we all caught a glimpse of the most spectacular firework display of lava and ash.

What did you think of your group leader?

He was absolutely fantastic! Being from a small village near Mount Etna, his local knowledge of food, history, culture and volcanoes was extremely impressive. As a leader he was friendly and patient and really looked after us all.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I would advise that the treks up Stromboli and Etna are definitely challenging, i'm not a fan of walking poles myself but most people in the group said they may not have managed without them. It can get very hot too so its really important to drink plenty of water and most of the group found this easy to carry in CamelBak hydration packs.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

My favourite day was our trip to Vulcano. The walking was  really enjoyable and the views were fantastic. We walked right around the crater rim and through the Fumerals, to be that close to them and smell the Sulphur made you realise just how active Vulcano is!
