See the impressive Town Hall with its timber-framed architecture and wooden ornamental figures that depict saints and artisans. Visit Wernigerode Castle or go shopping in the traditional town centre shops.
We highly recommend taking the Brockenbahn steam locomotive up the winding 19km-route to the summit of the legendary Brocken Mountain (1,142m), the highest peak in northern Germany. Enjoy this nostalgic tour as well as the wonderful panoramic views over the Harz National Park.
After exploring Wernigerode and its surroundings, why not take a day excursion to the picturesque town of Goslar in the western Harz region.

The castle was originally a medieval fortress whose purpose was to make safe way for the German Emperors on their hunting expeditions. During the 16th Century, it was rebuilt into a Renaissance-style fortress and then, after being greatly damaged in the Thirty Years' War, it was again rebuilt in the late 17th Century. This second time, it was Count Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode who added Baroque style to the remains and made it a romantic residence palace.
Harzer Steam Railway
A narrow gauge railway that leads from Wernigerode to the Brocken (1141 m), the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, and then goes to Nordhausen to the south of the Harz mountains. The second highest peak, Wurmberg (971 m), is accessible by cable car from Braunlage which is connected by bus to Wernigerode.
