Day 1
Start Carcassonne.
Fly to Toulouse; transfer to Carcassonne.
Day 2
Loop ride around Carcassonne to the foot of the “Montagne Noire”.
In the morning you will cycle in the direction of the “Montagnes Noires” whose rivers & streams feed into the Canal du Midi. This will be a great opportunity to discover the region of Les Corbieres, renowned for its wine, limestone landscape and Mediterranean influence. The first long stop will be at the village of Caunes Minervois, a typical 11th century Cathar village which is home to the spectacular Benedictine abbey from the 8th century. On the way back to Carcassonne there will be a stop at the vineyard of Fontanille the haut, here you can explore the vineyard and sample the produce. The last few km will be along the Canal du Midi to give a taste for the next two cycling days!
Day 3
Cycle from Carcassonne over locks and bridges to Lezignan Corbieres.
After breakfast you will cycle almost exclusively along the Canal du Midi, following the relaxing canal paths and designated cycle paths. Today’s ride is very relaxing and mostly downhill, a succession of locks, bridges and lovely villages like Trèbes, Marseillette, la Redorte and Homps await. You will have time to visit all the towns, including the fruit trees, rice fields and almond plantations in Marseillette. You will leave the canal and continue towards Lezignan Corbieres where you will spend the night.
Day 4
Follow the Canal du Midi from Lezignan Corbieres to Beziers.
Today is another nice day of cycling along the Canal du Midi and entering Minervois country. Minervois is a flat region surrounded by olive trees, with a strong Cathar influence. You will cross the stunning Canal de la Robine coming up from Narbonne, this is a perfect time to stop for lunch and take some photos. The Canal du Midi then starts to head north as it winds its way up towards Beziers. In the afternoon you cycle past the Enserume Oppidum, a fantastic site where the remains of an old Gallic village can be seen. You finish the ride by cycling in to Beziers and to our hotel in the centre of town.
Day 5
Cycle through vineyards from Beziers to Narbonne.
After breakfast you will follow the Canal du Midi back the same way as the day before for 8km before heading south to get to the sea! On the way you will discover some pretty villages like Fleury which is set in a magnificent location surrounded by vineyards. Once at Saint Pierre la Mer, you will get the first views of the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. The cycle from Saint Pierre de Mer to Narbonne is superb as you will follow the recently built cycling path “La littoral”. This cycle path follows the Robine Canal and crosses the sea resort of Guissan.
Day 6
Free day in Narbonne; don’t miss a visit to Patisserie Combot!
Narbonne is the perfect city to enjoy a free day as there is plenty to see and do. We recommend visiting the Archbishops’ Palace, this Gothic wonder is now home to the town hall and a couple of Narbonne’s museums. Also recommended is the Gothic Cathedral de St-Just and St-Pasteur. The one place that cannot be missed on any visit to Narbonne is the Patisserie Combot, this wonderful Patisserie is a Narbonne institution known for its delicious cakes and pastries!
Day 7
Circular ride from Narbonne around the stunning Sigean Lake.
For the last day cycling, you will go on a loop ride around Narbonne on the Canal de la Robine, and around the Sigean Sea Lake, passing the nice villages of Peyriac de Mer and Portel des Corbieres.
Day 8
End Toulouse.
Spend the morning in Narbonne at your own pace before a transfer to Toulouse airport.
