A variety of shops can be found in the narrow alleyways of Salzburg's Old Town. Here, you will find everything from international brands to small exclusive boutiques. Many traditional shops are located near Getreidegasse, the location for many bakeries, wineries, confectioners and tailors.

Salzburger Heimatwerk

Located in a dignified stone building, this is one of the best places in town to buy local Austrian handicrafts and original traditional costumes.

Schatz Konditorei

An excellent pastry shop in the centre of the Old Town. The store's specialty is the highly acclaimed 'Mozart Kugeln', a delicious praline made of pistachio, marzipan, and hazelnut nougat dipped in chocolate.

Goldener Hirsch

This renovated inn, established in 1407, is one of the most sought after venues in Salzburg. The cuisine and wine list are excellent and the restaurant is staffed with a superb team of chefs and waiters.

Stiftskeller St. Peter

The oldest restaurant in Europe, housed in the former abbey of a church. Aside from a collection of baroque banquet rooms, there is an inner courtyard with vaults cut from the living rock, a handful of dignified wood-paneled rooms, and a brick-vaulted cellar with a tile floor and rustic chandeliers. In addition to wine from the abbey's own vineyards, the tavern serves good home-style Austrian cooking.

Café Tomaselli

This renowned café opens onto one of the most charming cobblestone squares of Salzburg's Old Town. Choose from 40 different kinds of homemade cakes and a wide range of drinks.

Mozart House

Visit Mozart's birthplace and residential house of his family. The integrated museum now hosts precious relics such as the violin Mozart used to play as a child as well as portraits, letters and other memorabilia of the Mozart family.

Fortress Hohensalzburg

The massive fortress built on Festungsberg Mountain crowns the city of Salzburg. To get there, you can hike up one of the paths or take the funicular from Festungsgasse. The Fortress Museum is distinguished mainly by its collection of medieval art.

Mirabell Castle & Gardens

This palace and its gardens were originally built as a luxurious private residence in the style of the Tuileries in Paris. Today, the palace is the official residence of  the mayor of Salzburg.

Hellbrunn Palace, Park & Fountains

A popular spot for outings from Salzburg, this palace dates from the early 17th century and was built as a hunting lodge and summer residence. The palace gardens, one of the oldest baroque formal gardens in Europe, are known for their trick fountains.
